WIRELESS POWER TRANSFER

RF-DC Boost Converter for Wireless-powered Biomedical Implants

With advancing technologies, most components of medical implants can be scaled down; however, power sources are still lagged behind. To allow an implant last for years to decades without interruption, a battery with a significant amount of size is needed. To this end, the wireless power transfer is an essential technology to enrich the functionalities of medical implants and increase their longevity.

In this project, my goal is to build a wireless charging platform with a pair of inductive-coupled coil operated at radio-frequency (RF) to deliver energy wirelessly for medical implants, and to design an RF-to-DC boost converter to achieve such a desired DC output. The resulting prototype of wireless-powered RF-DC boost converter has been successfully fabricated on a printed circuit board (PCB). This project has the potential to prolong the lifespan and enrich the functionalities of medical implants without significantly increasing their size.
